At Clinic na gCapall, our team of experienced equine vets and support staff aim to provide the highest standards in looking after all the horses under our care.

We aim to provide a precise diagnosis to your equine’s problems and provide targeted treatment.

Clinic na gCapall is located in Co. Carlow in the province of Leinster, in the South-East of Ireland. We are located just off junctions 6 and 7 of the M9, providing easy access to and from counties Waterford, Kilkenny, Kildare, Laois and Wexford.

Services We Provide

Lameness Exams

The team at Clinic na gCapall combine extensive experience with rigorous clinical examination and modern digital imaging.  Coupled with the innovative use of diagnostic orthopaedic ultrasound and digital X-ray, this aids our clinicians in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions.

All the team have undergone continuous professional development in lameness diagnosis and advanced imaging techniques.

Myriad treatment methods may be employed in isolation or in tandem. Services provided at the clinic include: extracorporeal shockwave therapy, PRP injection, ultrasound guided joint injection and mesotherapy.



Pre-purchase exams

The facilities at the practice were designed to give the ideal location for conducting a pre-purchase exam. These include:

– trot-up area

– secure lunge arena

– circle for trotting on hard surface

– rubber lined examination rooms.

Vets routinely carry out pre-purchase exams also at training yards, sale complexes and other facilities, equipped with mobile X-ray, ultrasound and endoscopes.  Please ring the

office to discuss your needs.

 

Reproduction

All our vets have a strong background in equine reproduction. The practice is located close to, and serves many top thoroughbred and sport horse studs. Feel free to call the office to arrange a consultation to discuss your breeding needs. 



Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory

The purpose built practice building incorporates an in-house laboratory and pharmacy.

Diagnostic Imaging

The practice is equipped with modern mobile digital ultrasound and digital radiography.  All vets attend ISELP courses annually.  Jeremiah is the only certified ISELP practitioner in Ireland.

ABOUT ISELP

Formed in the United States, under the direction of Dr. Jean-Marie Denoix, The International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP) is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Educational Association focused on lameness in the equine athlete. The goal of ISELP is to provide contemporary knowledge and techniques in the continually evolving field of equine locomotor analysis to better prepare the equine clinician to understand and manage lameness conditions in the equine athlete.

The Team

Vets:

Jeremiah O’ Sullivan MVB Cert VR Cert ISELP MRCVS     (Partner)

Jerry graduated from UCD in 1984. He first worked as house surgeon in the Royal Vet School in Edinburgh before lecturing in Large Animal Surgery at U.C. D.  After gaining post-graduate Certification in Veterinary Radiology, he worked in equine practice on the Curragh, Co. Kildare for over a decade. During this time he was a two time winner of the BEVA annual congress imaging competition, winning a BEVA Travel Trust scholarship to the University of Florida.  He founded Clinic na gCapall in Co. Carlow. in 1997. 

Jerry has delivered lectures nationally and internationally, principally on orthopaedics, diagnostic imaging and reproduction.  He is a panel member vet for Goffs, Tattersalls, the RDS, Cavan and Goresbridge horse sales. 

In 2019, he was certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology by ISELP, the only practitioner in Ireland to date to achieve this qualification. 

 

Gillian Maddock MA VetMB MRCVS

Gillian, a Carlow native, qualified from Cambridge University Vet School in 1999. After a year in mixed practice, she spent five years in a large equine hospital in the Cotswolds, working in a wide range of equine disciplines.  She also managed to shuttle to New Zealand for a stud season in between.  She returned to Ireland and has worked in Clinic na gCapall since 2005. Her main clinical interests lie in treating the racehorse and reproductive medicine. 

 

William Toomey MVB Cert DHH.     (Partner)

Bill qualified from UCD in 2007 and immediately commenced work on the Curragh under the watchful eye of Ned Gowing. After a spell working in the UK and Australia, he returned to Ireland, working with Des Barnwell in Co. Limerick for several years.  He has been with Clinic na gCapall since 2015 and joined Jerry as a partner in 2021.  He is a member of the veterinary panel at Goresbridge Horse Sales. His primary clinical interests include: poor performance and lameness investigation, diagnostic imaging and pre-purchase examinations. 

 

Patrick McCooey BVSC Cert VPH

Paddy, from Newry, Co. Down, graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2003. After an externship in the renowned New Bolton Centre Equine Hospital in Pennsylvania, Paddy locumed with Jerry in Clinic na gCapall and in mixed practice before moving to Australia to work in racehorse practice. Paddy then worked in equine practice in  Yorkshire and Northern Ireland before relocating and joining Clinic na gCapall again in 2019.  His main clinical interests included poor performance and lameness investigation in the racehorse and sales work. 

 

Emma Hosey MVB Cert AVP

Emma, a Co. Carlow native, graduated from UCD in 2014. After a two year stint in mixed practice, she completed an internship in Fethard Equine Hospital before heading to Australia for a breeding season. Upon returning to Ireland she spent several years working on the Curragh before joining Clinic na gCapall in 2022. Her main clinical interests include reproduction, foal medicine and sport horse medicine.
